COX’S BAZAR, Oct 23 (UNB): Hundreds of locals came together on Tuesday to mark the launch of Digital Island allowing residents of Maheshkhali to enjoy faster internet facilities and other services.
The Digital Island is a comprehensive programme that links one of Bangladesh's most isolated communities to the world through the country's fastest internet speeds.
Maheshkhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Jamirul Islam inaugurated the project, the first Public Private Partnership (PPP) with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), Korea Telecom, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Division of the Bangladesh and Computer Council (BCC), said a media release issued by IOM.
The project refurbished an existing tower in Maheshkhali and installed GiGA microwave, so that residents now benefit from internet speeds of over 100 MBps.
Faster data access taps the community into enhanced health, education and employment services and residents are offered educational tools and online health services to secure medical treatment.
Employment opportunities are created for local producers to sell organic, dried fish products through an ecommerce platform.
Maheshkhali was selected for this programme because it is one of the most under-developed communities in Bangladesh.
