RANGPUR, Mar 12 (BSS): Speakers at a daylong conference of women leaders have stressed for building a discrimination-free society to ensure women empowerment through strengthening grassroots level women leadership.
They also advocated for establishing gender equality to flourish women leadership at all levels for changing condition of the womenfolk, who constitutes half of the population, to ensure social justice, peace and overall national uplift.
They were addressing the tenth conference organised for the grassroots level women leaders of Sadar upazila and city units of Grassroots Women Leaders Network (GWLN) with the assistance of Nagorik Uddog (NU) at Town Hall auditorium on Tuesday.
Over 200 trained grassroots women leaders participated in the conference also attended by government and NGO officials, women leaders and activists, civil society members, professionals and elite.
Presided over by President of Sadar upazila and Rangpur city units of the GWLN Kalpona Rani Roy, the conference was attended by District Women Affairs Officer Shameema Akhter Banu as the chief guest.
District unit President of Shushashoner Janno Nagorik Professor Maloy Kishore Bhattacharya, educationist Fakhrul Anam Benzu, Medical Officer of Family Planning Association of Bangladesh Dr Samorpita Ghosh Tanya, Registration Officer of District Social Service Department Mosaddekur Rahman, President of Rangpur Chapter of Association of Development Agencies in Bangladesh Moshfeka Razzaque, Project Coordinator of NU from Dhaka Mahbuba Sultana and its Programme Officer (Field Operations) Abu Naser Masud, addressed.
Area Manager of NU Shyamol Mohanta delivered welcome speech in the conference. Earlier, a colourful rally was brought out in the city streets.
The speakers highly lauded the roles being played by grassroots level GWLN and NU leaders in reducing repression on women and eradicating social curses like child marriage, dowry, divorce, polygamy for building a peaceful society.
They demanded protection and promotion of the rights of the women and girl children, ensuring access to productive resources and encouraging equitable sharing of family responsibilities, food security and social empowerment in all spheres of life.
They stressed for creating social awareness among the grassroots level women leaders about the concerned laws and universal human rights and assisting the local government bodies in settling the local disputes to ensure justice. The chief guest called upon the grassroots level women leaders to work together for bringing an end to all sorts of discriminations and tortures being faced by the womenfolk in families, society and everywhere for smooth flourishing of women leadership.
