Distribution of 17,716 tonnes VGF rice ending in Rangpur

RANGPUR, July 26 (BSS): Distribution of 17,716 tonnes rice under Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme to assist the poor in celebrating holy Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr festivity has been nearing completion in Rangpur division.
According to official sources, distribution of the huge quantity of VGF rice has already been completed in most of the 58 upazilas in eight districts under Rangpur division and the process will end by Sunday next.
Under the programme, over 17.71 lakh VGF card holder extremely poor and distressed beneficiary families of Rangpur division have been getting the allocated rice with 10-kg rice per family.
District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers (DRRO) of Rangpur Abdus Salam today said the Ministry of Food and Disaster Management has allocated the rice for the poor families to assist them celebrating the Ramadan and Eid-ul-Fitr festivity.
Earlier, as per direction of the district administrations, upazila administrations in association with union VGF committees and public representatives prepared list of the beneficiary families to end VGF rice distribution before the Eid-ul-Fitr festivity.
Under the programme, 4,007.13 tonnes of the special VGF rice are being distributed among over 4 lakh beneficiary families with 10 kg each in all 76 unions under eight upazilas of Rangpur district.
Similarly, 1,506.69 tonnes VGF rice are being distributed among over 1.50 lakh families in Gaibandha, 673.84 tonnes for 67,384 families in Lalmonirhat, 4,003.17 tonnes for over four lakh families in Kurigram and 3,755.51 tonnes rice for over 3.75 lakh families in Nilphamari districts.
Besides, 1,598.72 tonnes of VGF rice are being distributed among over 1.58 lakh beneficiary families of Dinajpur, 1,122.58 tonnes among over 1.12 lakh families of Thakurgaon and 1,049.21 tonnes among over1.04 lakh families of Panchagarh districts.
In addition to this, VGF rice are also being distributed among the extremely poor and distressed families living in all pourasabhas under all eight districts of Rangpur division under the programme, the DRRO added.
Record sales in Eid markets
A BSS report says: The Eid markets have been witnessing record sales as hundreds of all age's people rushing to the markets and shopping centres everywhere in Rangpur division just ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.
According to the leaders of different business organisations and trade bodies at bigger markets, shopping malls, complexes and makeshifts markets, Eid shopping has reached at the highest peak amid tight security measures and peaceful atmosphere.
Businesspersons at the markets and shopping malls in Rangpur city said selling has marked an all-time record despite higher prices this year following further improvement in the economic condition and increase of incomes of all people.
The markets, shopping malls and other business places have worn festive looks with rushing men, women, girls, boys, students, youths and adolescents for buying items of own choice.
