RAJSHAHI, Apr 21 (BSS): Speakers at a pre-budget discussion here today called for formulating district-based budget for reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the people.
In this regard, they also mentioned that the budget should be pro-people and welfare-oriented so that it could bring economic emancipation of the grassroots people.
The local unit of Campaign for Good Governance (CGG) arranged the discussion at Master Chef Restaurant in Rajshahi city aimed at collecting opinion and suggestions relating to the forthcoming budget.
CGG local unit general secretary Azizur Rahman welcomed the participants and presented a concept paper on the issue. Associate Professor Rashed Kabir of Finance and Banking Department of Rajshahi University addressed the discussion as focal person with CGG local unit president Akbarul Hassan Millat in the chair.
Former Chairman of Rajshahi Education Board Prof Nurul Alam, Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Prof Fazlul Haque, local unit Coordinator of Bangladesh Legal Aid Services Trust Abdus Samad, Ward Councilor of Rajshahi Abu Sayeed Tuku, president of Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry Dilara Begum and business leader Sekendar Ali spoke on the occasion, among others.
The speakers demanded special allocations for surface water-based irrigation project and emphasized on preservation of river waters before it goes to sea and protecting Rajshahi's agriculture from adverse impacts of climate change.
They demanded agro-based industries for processing and preservation of potatoes, tomatoes, mangoes and lichis and urged the government for resisting tobacco cultivation.
Besides, they demanded allocations for protecting silk sector from ruination and interest-free loan for silk growers for five years.
They urged the government to identify the local needs through proper assessment everywhere in the region and bring those under budgetary allocation for the sake of a balanced development of the country.
