SYLHET, July14: Educational activities at 157 secondary schools in the Sylhet division have been suspended after the excessive rain and flash flood, official sources informed on Sunday afternoon.
The decision to keep the schools shut has been taken as the premises have gone under water, the official said, adding, if the rain continues further, more institution would soon be shut temporarily.
Deputy Director of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Sylhet Md. Jahangir Ahmed told this correspondent the most affected areas are in Sunamganj.
A total of 108 secondary schools in Biswambharpur, Tahirpur and Doarabazar and Chhatak upazilas of Sunamganj have already been shut.
Of the rests, 37 are in Sylhet, six in Moulvibazar and other six in Habiganj districts, the official added.
However, at least another 25 secondary schools are at risk as the wtwr level has been on the rise. These may be shut any time, he said.
The District Education Officer, (Secondary) of Sunamganj Md Jahangir Alam said on Sunday almost all the 11 upazilas in Sunamganj are more or less affected by the flood.
If the rains continued further with rolling of water from the upstream, many more schools would be shut in a day or two, the official added.
Almost whole of the Sunamganj district are in the haor (low lying) region and rural roads have been either inundated or at the risk of inundation, he said.
On the other hand, 204 primary schools in Sunamganj district suspended classes during the last few days. Besides, attendance in another hundred primary schools had gone down amid an inclement weather, sources informed. Of the total, water had entered into the 22 primary schools in Sunamganj Sadar, three in Dakshin Sunamganj, 59 in Dharmapasha, 30 in Tahirpur, 27 in Biswambharpur, 18 in Doarabazar, 10 in Chhatak and 30 in Jamalganj upazila.
