KHULNA, Apr 26: Extreme drought has brought about colossal losses in fish and agriculture resources by about Tk 20 billion in south-western regions. Shrimp production has come down by to 50 per cent due to continuous drought for about last one month.
Besides, the shrimp cultivators are passing their days in panic over released shrimp fry in their Ghers (shrimp enclosure) worth about Tk one billion of this area.
Meanwhile, shrimp fry and other fish fry worth about Tk. 2 billion have been lost due to heavy drought in Khulna, Jessore, Bagerhat and Satkhira region.
The cultivators fear that shrimp fry of Tk one billion will perish if the rain does not pour immediately.
According to fisheries department 55 per cent prone and 45 per cent shrimp grow from Khulna region. Current year it was hoped that production of prone will rise by 10 per cent than the previous years. But drought has cast a doubt on it.
