Drought-like situation, pest attack frustrate Magura Aman growers

MAGURA, Sept 29: Massive pest attack, drought like situation and fall in underground water level are frustrating Aman growers in the district.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said some 58430 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of Aman cultivation this season with an output target of 2,39,563 tonnes of rice.

Razon Sheikh of Goalbathan village under Magura Sadar said he has brought two bighas of land under Aman cultivation this season.

"But massive Mazra pest attack has faded the expectation of getting a good yield", he added.

Another farmer Golam Hossein of Mathbari village under Sadar upazila said, "My paddy plants are turning into yellowish due to lack of sufficient rain."

"Moreover, I am failing to irrigate my paddy field properly due to fall in underground water level", the grower further said.

Magura Public Health Engineering Department sub assistant engineer Jinnarul Islam said more dependence on underground water is the main reason for its falling causing threatening to our agriculture and ecology.

Magura DAE official Gobinda Zoarder admitted that they are aware of insect attack in Aman field.

"We are suggesting the farmer to use proper insecticides", he added.
