RANGPUR, Sept 29: The farmers of the district are showing their interest in farming of eddo (mukhi kachu or boi kachu), a variety of arum on their lands in recent years due to good profit.
According to sources eddo is being cultivated abundantly in the district and its adjacent areas and growers are also earning satisfactory profit from its sale in market.
Everyday, from the region, huge quantities of vegetables including eddo are being transported to different markets of other districts including capital, sources said.
Bakkor Ali, a taro arum cultivator of Boiragiganj area under Mithapukur upazila told this correspondent that farming of eddo variety arum easier than the cultivation of some other crops as it does not require much irrigation as well as fertiliser.
He has been cultivating taro on his 45 decimals of land for the last six years and getting good profit, he also said.
Amirul Mia, another farmer of Laldighi village under Badarganj upazila, said he has cultivated eddo on 35 decimals of land this season. He said he has already earned Tk 25,000 from its sale.
Peasants of the region have changed their fortune by cultivating eddo and some other varieties of vegetables as its farming has proved profitable in recent years, he also said.
Presently, different kitchen markets of the region are overflowing with huge quantities of vegetables including eddo.
The quantity is on the rise as there has been a bumper production of the vegetable this year, said Saiful, a vegetable seller at Kamalkachhna Bazar, in the city.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Rangpur official sources said owing to good profit in comparison with other crops the farming of vegetables including taro is on the rise across the district recently.
Due to utilisation of modern technologies, yield of arum and many vegetables is enhancing in the district, sources added.
