CUMILLA, Sept 09: Meat production has increased in Cumilla Sadar upazila, but the production of milk and egg cannot meet the local demand, a report by the upazila animal resources office said this on Monday.

The office sources said the population in six unions under Sadar upazila is 4, 56,191. Broiler chicken provides 40 per cent of the meat. The rest is provided from cows, goats, buffaloes and sheep.

Upazila animal resources officer Chandan Kumar Poddar said there are 21 poultry farms, 169 dairy farms and 110 broiler chicken farms in the upazila in addition to some golden chicken farms in the upazila.

Ziaul Haque, proprietor of ZH Agro Park in Dhanuakhala village under Kalibazar union, said about 8,000 eggs and 200 litres of milk are produced at his farm per day.

Upazila animal resources officer said the government focusses on cow rearing to boost milk production and reduce powdered milk import.

Under the Livestock and Dairy Development Programme, in July, a five-year project worth Tk 43 billion has started to increase the number of livestock farms in all the upazilas across the country.
