Eid shopping gets momentum in Sylhet city markets

SYLHET, July 14: Eid shopping reached peak in the markets in Sylhet city as well as in the upazila towns with only few days left to the Muslims' greatest festival.
The traders are hopeful of making a good profit this year, as expatriates in good number had already been here to celebrate the festival with near and dear ones.
Buyers at footpath and roadside vendors is on rise too. Alongside traditional dresses, Manipuri ones, including sariees, shirts and other items also got much attraction this time.
The buyers in Sylhet however, facing much trouble due to scorching heat or rains for the last few days.
The consumers, complained price of the dresses for male, female, girls, adolescents, children and babies are comparatively higher this year.
'The high prices have already put many people in trouble adjusting with budgets. Middle class and low-income groups are bearing the brunt, said businessman Abdul Hasib of Rainagar area.
Shop-owner of Jononi Saree Ghar of Shukria market Nazrul Islam said turnout of customers and rate of sales went up as the main religious festival is drawing nearer.
People with bigger budget are preferring fashion houses like Signature,  Maha, Aarong, Mammy, She, Komola Bhandar, Al-Hamra, Millennium market, Blue Water Shopping city, Monoram, Tulona, Deshi dosh, Charima, Smartex, Real Man, Richman etc.
Sylhet Plaza, Modhubon Market, Hasan Market, Latif Centre, Al-Marzan Centre, Nehar Market, etc are serving the middle and upper middle class buyers.
Customers of all ages, especially children and youngsters are flocking into shopping malls for dresses, footwear, ornaments and cosmetics from morning till midnight, said Anwar Mia, salesman of a readymade shop at Hasan market.
'But, the low and fixed income-group people are trying to manage the high prices of fashionable dresses, ornaments and cosmetics,' said Abdul Hasib of Chhararpar area. Fashion houses like Infinity, Signature Collection, Smartex and Maha drew much attention with good number of young people buying trousers, shirts and others with latest designs.
Fashion house Womens' Fashion World's managing director Swarnalata Roy said as a practice in Sylhet, shopping starts at the middle of Ramadan, but it gets peak in the last week. The customers are now rushing for last minute shopping, she added.
