COX'S BAZAR, Oct 24: An elephant calf was found dead in the Hoarioghona hill at Panerchhara in Ramu upazila of Cox's Bazar district on Tuesday.
It was an Asian female elephant, approximately 7-8 years old. Initially, it is believed that the elephant was killed when it came in contact with electric wires.
The forest department recovered the body on Tuesday at around 10 am.
Locals alleged that the elephant often roams in the area. A miscreant killed the elephant by tying it with an electric wire at the dark of night.
Cox's Bazar South Forest Division Head Md. Sarwar Alam said, "It is believed to have died initially due to food poisoning. Many people said that it was killed due to electrocution”.
He said, “However, there were no signs of electrocution".
He further added, "After the postmortem of the elephant, the samples were collected”.
“The post-mortem report also found no evidence of the elephant being killed. Samples are being sent to Dhaka. After the forensic department test, the report will reveal the actual cause of death", he added.
