Ensuring healthcare facilities for ultra-poor people emphasised

RANGPUR, Aug 21: Speakers at a view exchange meeting emphasised the need for proper health management system in order to ensure healthcare facilities for the ultra-poor people at village and grassroots levels. They also called for making Upazila and community level hospitals effective, along with formulating a health policy so that the extreme poor people can get adequate healthcare facilities.
Advocacy for Social Change of Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC) organised the daylong meeting under its challenging the Frontiers Poverty Reduction- Targeting the Ultra Poor (CFPR-TUP) Project at District Civil Surgeon Office auditorium in Rangpur city on Wednesday.   
Deputy Director of the Department of Health, Rangpur division, Dr. Shawkat Ali addressed the meeting as chief guest while Deputy Director of  Family Planning, Rangpur Division, Dr. Md. Shafiqul Islam, Deputy Director of Social Service Department, Rangpur Nazmun Nahar, Deputy Civil surgeon, Rangpur Dr. Abdul Mazid were present as special guests. Civil surgeon, Rangpur Dr. Mozammel Haque presided over the meeting.
Abu Sayed, BRAC Officer, Rangpur delivered the welcome speech while BRAC Officer Menhazul Islam coordinated the meeting. Md. Ali Hossain Senior Manager Advocacy for Social Change, BRAC Head Office, Dhaka presented the keynote paper.    
Regional Manager BRAC TUP (Health) programme Rangpur, Md. Ali Ahmed described the aims and objectives of the project arranged for reaching the services being provided under the CFPR-TUP Project to the ultra poor people in the rural areas giving special priority and the success achieved so far.
Flood situation worsens
A BSS report says: The flood situation deteriorated further as the major rivers are flowing above danger marks (DM) at seven points in Nilphamari, Kurigram, Gaibandha, Bogra and Sirajganj districts marooning over 0.15 million people.
The situation worsened during the past 24 hours ending at 6 am today due to continuous onrush of waters from the upstream during the period, sources in Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said.
However, the rate of onrushing floodwater marked reduction during the past 24 hours with a possibility of improving situation during the next 72 hours, sources said.
Meanwhile, local sources and union chairmen reported incidents of sporadic erosion at places in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Bogra and Sirajganj districts.
Executive Engineer of the Teesta Barrage Project Division of BWDB Mahbubur Rahman said the Teesta marked a sharp rise during the past 24 hours and is flowing 30 cm above its DM at Dalia point in Nilphamari.
