Erosion by Teesta takes serious turn in Kawnia: 60 families rendered homeless

RANGPUR, July 21:  With the rise of water level erosion by the river Teesta has taken a devastating turn at Char Dhusmara village under Kawnia upazila in the district during past few days, creating panic among the people and posing serious threat to a number of establishments in the area.  
According to sources, a vast tract of arable lands and a good number of dwelling houses of the area have been devoured by the river during last few days leaving over sixty of destitute families homeless.
The homeless families said that they have been passing hard days but are yet to get any help from neither the government nor any non government organization. They apprehended that erosion in adjacent areas might be deteriorated.  Besides, due to erosion Dhusmara government primary school is going to be disappeared into the river soon.  
Rezaul Islam, Headmaster of the primary school said the school building was about one km away from the river last year but presently a big portion of the school building has already been devoured by the river.  If the erosion continues for few more days, the entire school building may disappear into the river very soon, he apprehended.
They informed the upazila administration of the matter but no steps have so far been taken in this regard, he also said.
If the situation continues for few more days hundreds of acres of crop lands, many houses and local union parishad building may go under water soon, locals apprehended.
Sub-standard Iftar items
Another report from Our Correspondent adds: Sale of adulterated and sub-standard Iftar items is going on unabated in the district since the beginning of the month of Ramadan, causing serious health hazards to the people.
According to sources, substandard food items like beguni, piaju, mutton chop, bundia, jilapi, potato chop, halim, chickpea etc are prepared in unhygienic conditions using adulterated and low quality ingredients.
Besides, most of the Iftar items are sold at open spaces, roadsides and makeshift shops, as a result dust and filth get mixed with those items. These sorts of Iftar items are causing harm to public health.
Moreover, the edible oils used for preparing Iftar are also adulterated and of low quality. Even burnt edible oils are reused for cooking Iftar items.
It is alleged that the traders sell different kinds of seasonal fruits, including mango, Pineapple which are treated with formalin. Some buyers also alleged that most of the roadside vendors are selling substandard Iftar items at high prices.
