RAJSHAHI, Jun 5 (BSS): Speakers at a post-rally discussion here today unequivocally called for freeing the environment from all sorts of pollutions including sea level rising for the sake of survival of all the living beings.
They viewed that the environment has been facing a serious threat due to various natural and manmade catastrophes posing identical threat to the animals-plants biodiversity at present.
The Department of Environment (DoE) and District Administration jointly organized the discussion at Shilpakala Academy auditorium in observance of the World Environment Day-2014. "Raise your voice, Not the sea level" was the theme of the day.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Munir Hossain and Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr ANM Bazlur Rashid addressed the discussion as chief and special guests respectively with Deputy Commissioner Mmesbah Uddin Chowdhury in the chair.
Professor Dr Golam Sabbir Sattar Tapu of Geology and Mining Department of Rajshahi University was the keynote speaker while Mijanur Rahman, Officer-in-Charge of DoE, Rajshahi, welcomed the participants.
Marking the day, various government and non-government organizations including BELA brought out a colourful rally from Rajpara Police Station premises and paraded some city streets before being converged into the meeting venue.
In the discussion, the speakers said emphasis should be given on providing positive incentives for the reduction of emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and enhancing biodiversity conservation as well as promoting sustainable development goals of the region.
They called for creating awareness among all concerned including the younger generations and massive tree plantation to prevent environmental degradation that severely threatens existence of the whole planet, its habitation and civilization.
Expressing severe concern over environmental degradation, the discussants underlined the need for reducing industrial smoke emission, releasing poisonous wastes, stopping indiscriminate felling of trees and other manmade reasons for a safer future of the planet.
