Fair prices delight potato growers


BOGURA, Sept 19: Potato growers and hoarders in the district are delighted over the fair market prices of the produce this season.
The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office source said some 0.8 million tonnes of potato were produced from 85,000 hectares of land this season.
DAE officials said they had provided all sorts of support to the growers to make the cultivation programme a success. Besides, growers were provided incentive facilities.
Sources said among the total produce, some 0.5 million tonnes of potato were sold in the market and the rest 0.3 million tonnes had been hoarded in the February last.
Meanwhile, a total of 250 tonnes of potato were exported to Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea, Italy, North Korea and other 12 countries through the Chittagong Port and Tk 220 million was earned.
Sub-assistance agriculture officer of DAE Faridur Rahman said a good number of farmers from Shibganj, Dupchanchia, Kahaloo, Sherpur, Sonatola, Dhunot, Adamdighi, Nandigram, Shahjahanpur and Sadar upazilas of the district grow potato commercially every season and make a handsome profit.
