CHANDPUR, June 13: After suffering acutely for a long time, farmers have built a road on their own in a remote area of Palakhal union under Kachua upazila of the district to ensure easy carrying of their harvested crops home and smooth movement of the public as well.

In absence of a short-stretch road, the farmers had to face difficulties in carrying their harvested crops, including paddy, vegetables and fruits, home from fields in remote Meghdair Purbo village by travelling on an alternative route of long three kilometers including a roundabout.

It was a big problem faced by the village people for many years, of whom farmers were the worst sufferers.

To get out of this longstanding problem, a group of farmers came forward with whatever they had to build the road on a government-owned abandoned land. Some of their fellows also extended helping hands in the work.

They swung into action with collecting earth and water hyacinths and dumping those on both sides of the place marked for the road.

They erected bamboos and drum sheets to protect the earth and thus became successful in building the long-desired road.

Their noble initiative brought a great relief not only for the farmers but also for hundreds of men, women and children of the area.

While talking to the FE, farmers Alauddin Mia, Billal Hossain and others said as the place is on government-owned land, they have built the road there at their own initiative to mitigate sufferings of the farmers and general people of Meghdair Purbo area.

Local resident Kamal Hossain said he along with his friends, who are owners of the land just beside the new road, are ready to sacrifice parts of their land on both sides to widen the road to remove longstanding woes of the farmers and the village people.

When contacted, local union parishad chairman Habibur Rahman Mazumder Joy told the FE, "The road has been temporarily built on the government-owned land for the convenience of the farmers and the people of Meghdair Purbo village . In the upcoming fiscal year, this road will be included in the development programme of the union.''

Kachua Upazila Agriculture Officer Mejbah Uddin said the road was urgently needed in the area for the farmers to take their harvested crops, including paddy, fruits and vegetables, comfortably to their homes from Meghdair Purbo's fields.
