Farmers expecting good yield of maize in Rangpur areas

RANGPUR, Mar 23: Maize plants at different areas under Rangpur division have grown well, predicting a good yield of the crop during the current season.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Rangpur sources, some 1,40,000 hectares of land have been brought under maize cultivation in 8 districts under Rangpur division this year and a bumper production  of the crop is expected in the region owing to congenial weather condition as well as timely supply of necessary agri- inputs.
Encouraged by low production cost and good price the farmers are showing their interest in maize cultivation as a result its cultivation is gaining ground in different areas of the region, sources said.
People of many char (shoal) areas also cultivated it this year like previous years on a large-scale and are optimistic of achieving an excellent yield as well.
The farmers of the region have cultivated NK-40, PACIFIC-984, BRAC-60, BRAC-984, POLLEN etc varieties in abundance as the production of these varieties is high, sources said.
Sources said that maize corn is mainly used for poultry, fish and cattle feed. For this reason its demand is increasing day by day.
Joynal member, a farmer of Anderkota village under Mithapukur upazila   in  Rangpur   told The Financial Express that he has cultivated the crop one acre  of land this year spending Tk 10,500 and is expecting to earn at least Tk 55,000 to Tk 60,000 as profit from its sale,  he further said.
Asadul, another maize grower of Mahipur village at Gangachara upazila in  Rangpur said that he has  cultivated the crop on 2 acres of land this year.  The  growth of  the plants is superb and is signaling a bumper production  of it this season, if the weather condition remains conducive, he added.
