BOGRA, Mar 29: A good number of farmers of the district have been making a handsome amount of money by growing Napier grass around the year.
Sources said low production cost, easy farming process and good market demand have encouraged the farmers to grow the grass on a large scale.
According to the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), over 230 hectares of land have been brought under the farming of the grass cultivation this season.
Napier grass is used as a fodder. It is being sold at Tk 40 to Tk 50 in the local market.
"I have cultivated Napier grass on two bighas of land spending Tk 12,000 this season. The production is satisfactory and I have already made a profit of Tk 30,000 ," said farmer Shahin Talukder of Kahaloo upazila.
The grower said he expects Tk 0.1 million more this season.
Protul Chandra Sarker, deputy director of DAE, said the high-yielding Napier grass has become popular among the cattle farmers across the area due to its nutritious value.
Besides, the fast-growing plant can be cultivated around the year, he added.
District Livestock Officer Dr Safiuzzaman said the demand for Napier grass is on the rise as it has a high nutrition value as cattle fodder.
