GAIBANDHA, May 25 (BSS): Agriculture experts at a function here on Saturday urged farmers to familiarise themselves with the pattern of four-crop including mug bean to ensure food security of the country and change their lots as well.
"As the agri sector of the country is under threat due to the climate related disasters and for reasons, crops production is being hampered seriously every year. Emphasis should be given on four-crop pattern with effective farming, strategies and technologies", they said.
They made the comments while addressing a function of farmers' field day on the harvest of mug bean at Habibullapur Govt. Primary School premises under Bongram union of Sadullapur upazila.
RDRS Bangladesh, a reputed NGO, organized the function under the project of Crops Intensification in Northern Region of Bangladesh in cooperation with Krishi Gobeshana Foundation and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agriculture University.
Upazila agriculture officer M. Obaidur Rahman Mondal addressed the function as the chief guest and acting president of Gaibandha Press Club and district correspondent of national news agency Sarker M. Shahiduzzaman was present as the special guest.
With programme manager of RDRS Bangladesh Porsia Rahman in the chair, the function was also addressed, among others, by assistant agriculture officer of the organization Saiful Islam, sub assistant agriculture officers Abdur Rab and Provat Kumar Adhikari, union federation president Birendranath Mondal and farmer Surendra Naath.
Upazila agri officer Obaidur Rahman Mondal said the objective of the four-crop pattern was to keep the agro production increasing avoiding high cost and environmental hazard of Boro farming by coping with the changed climatic condition to meet the growing demand of food.
Besides, to create working opportunities among the poor particularly the farm day labours all the year round including the lean period of Ashwin and Kartik months of Bangla year was another objective of the four-crop pattern, he also said.
In this context, the agri experts advised the farmers to farm short duration Aman paddy, mustard, potato, mug bean, indigenous parija paddy on their high and medium high land in a systematic way annually under new cropping pattern to get desired output against the crops.
Talking to the BSS, agriculture coordinator of RDRS Bangladesh Mamunur Rashid said a total of 2,100 bighas of land owned by 2,100 farmers of eight northern districts under Rangpur division were brought under mug bean farming during the current season following the cropping pattern.
