JOYPURHAT, Mar 11 (BSS): Farmers' interest continues to grow fast for strawberry cultivation in the district while the overall output of the high value fruit has increased 10 times than before.
Farmers are now getting 400-450 kgs strawberry a day from a bigha of land as it was only 50kgs some years ago.  The production increased mainly due to introduction of two foreign high-yielding varieties namely 'Kamarosa' and 'Festival' instead of the RABI-3, a local variety from Rajshahi Agriculture Research Institute. "I have cultivated strawberry this year on seven bighas of land with a cost of Taka 9 lakh and I am expecting that the financial return would be at least Taka 30 lakh by selling the fruit", said Zillur Rahman of village Khejurtoli of Jamalgonj upazila of the district. After introducing two high-yielding varieties from the United States-output of the strawberry now reached 400- 450 kgs per bigha a day, said Rahman, the first successful strawberry farmer of the district.
Earlier, Zillur had cultivated the strawberry fruit on 3 bighas of land with the inspiration of his elder brother who is a successful grape farmer, using the local variety RABI-3 but its daily output was not satisfactory.
The strawberry is being cultivated during January-March period and the farmers are getting financial benefit as its daily output has increased several times higher, said Azhar Ali Mondol, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE).
