GAIBANDHA, July 2 (BSS): Fisheries Department (FD) has prepared identity (ID) cards with photos for 2,333 fishermen of Sadar upazila aimed at bringing them under different subsidised programmes of the government.
Sadar upazila fisheries office is implementing the activity under Fishermen Registration and ID card distribution project while the government of Bangladesh is providing the fund, office sources said.
Senior upazila fisheries officer M. Abu Sayed said due to lack of their proper identities they could not avail themselves of the government assistance and opportunity during the lean period.
The ID card would help ensure the fishermen to get different subsidies and facilities from the government and other organisations to pass their days without hardship when they were not allowed to catch fish, he also said. In reply to a query, the fisheries officer said whip of the Jatiya Sangshad and local lawmaker Mahabub Ara Begum Gini is likely to distribute the ID cards to the selected fishermen of the upazila before Eid festival.
