Financial crisis paralyses academic activities in Jhenidah veterinary college

JHENIDAH, Aug 17: Shortage of money is greatly hampering academic as well as administrative activities in Jhenidah Government Veterinary College (JGVC) under Sadar upazila in the district.
Established on 10.15 acres of land, the college has infrastructures of an administrative and academic building, a boys' hostel, a girls' hostel, principal's quarter, an officers' quarter, a staff quarter, a central Jame mosque, a veterinary hospital, a large animal shed, a deep tube-well, a cafeteria and guest house, a deposition plant for rain water, a garage and dormitory and an electricity sub-station.
The constructions of buildings were done under a project of Tk 240 million while Tk 60 million more was spent for buying other things, including books and furniture, lab equipment, chemicals and reagents and vehicles.
Sources said 12 employees working here have not been getting wages for 19 months. However, no money came to the college from revenue and development budget in one and a half year.
Md. Sohel Rana working as cashier-cum-store-keeper in the college office said, "We have not been getting wages for last 19 moths as the project has been over. We are now leading sub-human lives here."
The 1st academic activities in the college started on March 2, 2014.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister Muhammed Sayedul Hoque, Secretary Dr. Shelina Afroza, DG Dr. Md. Shahidul Islam, Prof. Dr. AS Mahafuzul Bari and Local MP Tahzib Alam Siddiqi were present in the inaugural ceremony.
Sixty students now studying in Honours 1st year in Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), combined course, based on 11 departments.
Sources said to admit students in 2014-15 academic session in the institute has become tough for want of money.
Vice-principal of the college Dr. Md. Aminul Islam told this correspondent the college could not pay over Tk. 1.0 million, including electricity bill of around Tk. 0.8 million and union council tax of Tk. about 0.3 million. Electricity connections were cut off two times affecting a congenial academic atmosphere in the college, he added.
Principal of JGVC Dr. Md. Liaquat Ali told the FE, "109 posts including those of 52 teachers have been created. However, academic activities are now being run by 10 departmental officers brought here on deputation from Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock."
