GAIBANDHA, Dec 06: Tohura Begum, a woman of Bhasarpara village of Gaibandha's Phulchari, has been successfully farming mixed fishes in a tank, where ornamental fishes were seen hatching from eggs inside its water, as tilapias, carps and catfishes swam in search for food.
After taking a loan of Tk 100,000 from a non governmental organisation, the entrepreneur in her forties, started various small scale income generating activities, which, beside fish farming, includes growing vegetable and spice crops.
Tohura has been growing bay leaves, litchi trees, betel nut trees, turmeric, various vegetables, and ginger in sacks. She said that among all her projects, fish farming in a cement tank of 20-feet-diametre was the most challenging for her.
"When I started mixed fish farming in the tank, I bought fries worth
Tk 2,000 and released them in the tank. When each fish weighs half a kilogram, I sell it for Tk 200 per kg. This time (year), I will make a profit of Tk 50,000," she said.
Jahidul Islam, manager of the Balasighat branch of the SKS Foundation's microfinance programme, told the FE, that although Tohura Begum's projects are small, she has many projects.
He further said that following Tohura's example, others in Bhasarpara village will also start such projects now.
