Fish farming increasing in Khulna

KHULNA, Apr 21: The fish cultivators have become interested in fish farming in this area due to increasing demand and high price. The fish farming have been increased in local system though not increase in commercial purpose in this area. At the same time fish production also increased in this region. The production has been increased 1,231 tons against the demand of this year.

District fisheries office source said that the demand of fish of Khulna district is mitigated usually from 14 sources. Of them, 42 rivers of the district, 39,712 ponds, 669 canals, 30 beels, 663 commercial farms, 642 paddy fields, 22 social base fish projects, 22,761 lobster and 47,464 prawn plots. Moreover, fishes are supplied from different rivers and canals of Sundarbans and sea fish landing centres.   

Source said that the target was fixed 51,765 tonne fish in 2014-15 FY for the people of Khulna district according to demand per head of the year and produced 62,800 tonne and that is more 11,035 tonne more than the previous years.

According to source 65,664 shrimp plots were registered in Khulna district in 2013. Of them 21,617 plots are for prawn and 43,851 plots for lobster.  In 2014 registered shrimp plots have been increased to 70,225. The shrimp production target was fixed at 21,448 tonne in 2013-2014.

The shrimp cultivators said that they have to face various hindrances.  Last year virus found in the farms from the beginning of the season and quality shrimp seed was not available.
