Floating seedbed technique takes root in Chalan Beel

NATORE, Sept 08: Floating seedbed is gaining popularity among paddy growers in the district.

Sources said a good number of farmers apply the floating seedbed method in Chalan Beel area.

With a view to saving seedbeds from flood, the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has encouraged the cultivators to make floating seedbeds.

Sources said paddy farmers suffered much this season as early flood hit the low-lying lands and seedbed on some 300 hectares of area damaged.

Moreover, seedbeds on more than 390 hectares of land had damaged last year due to severe flood like situation, sources added.

DAE officials said floating seedbed is a modern method. It is made of banana trees, bamboo and weed.

Farmer Hisham Uddin of Shingra uapzila said he has been making seedbeds on floating land for the last two years and getting a good result.

He said seedbeds on two decimals of land cost around Tk 2,700.

In a recent visit at Chaddagram, Baluvora, Hulhulia, Pakuaria, Dahia and some adjacent villages of the region this correspondent found the farmers were taking care of their floating seedbeds to grow healthy paddy seedlings.

Upazila agriculture officer of DAE Sajjad Hosssain said some 24 spots in the upazila have been brought under floating seedbed this season.
