Floating veg farming brings fortune for 800 growers

GOPALGANJ, Aug 29: About 800 farmers of Gopalganj Sadar upazila are living a better life by growing vegetables on floating lands in rainy season.
According to the local agriculture office sources, about 20 hectares of land have been brought under floating vegetable cultivation in the upazila this season with the production target of 220 tonnes.
Vegetable like on okra, cucumber, pumpkin, radish, carrot, yard long bean, gourd and other leafy vegetables are generally grown in the floating land.
Lalchand Roy, a farmer of Domrashur village, said he is cultivating different kinds of vegetable in a floating land. The peasant said he does not use any chemical fertilisers and pesticides on the field. He said he is satisfied with the production.
Md Mizanur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer said vegetable cultivation on floating lands ensures an additional income for the growers. If a farmer spends around Tk 3,000 on a decimal of floating vegetable land he would able to make a net profit of Tk 6,000.
