GAIBANDHA, Sep 10 (BSS): Overall flood situation in the district except five unions of Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas improved further with the fall of water level in all the major rivers here in the last 24 hours until this morning.
The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said the Brahmaputra marked fall by 28 cm, the Ghagot 21 cm, the Karotoa 7 cm and the Teesta 12 cm during the period.
Of them, the river Ghagot was flowing 4 cm above its danger level at New Bridge Road point of the district town while the river Brahmaputra was flowing along the danger level and the Karotoa and the Teesta were flowing below their respective danger level.
On the other hand, Kholahati, Boali, and Badiakhali unions of Sadar upazila and Kanchipara, and Udakhali unions under Fulchhari upazilas have been flooded freshly as a portion of Sonail Embankment was breached at Godarhat area under Kholahati union on Tuesday due to pressure of the swelling Ghagot river water.
Many of the flood affected families have taken shelter on the Sonail Embankment with their belongings including domestic animals and poultry birds.
Sadar UNO Ashraful Momin Khan said 23 tonnes of rice have been allocated for the flood victims of Kholahati and Boali unions of the upazila and the rice would be distributed soon.
Another BSS report from Jamalpur says: The overall flood situation in the district further improved with the continuous receding of water in the river Jamuna.
Water Development Board said during the 24 hours Jamuna dropped 22 cm and was flowing 12 cm over the red mark at Bahadurabad Ghat point at 12 noon Thursday.
About 52,678 families of 380 villages in seven upazilas of the district were affected by the flood, said District Relief and Rehabilitation office sources.
District education officer Shamsul Haque Khan said flood waters entered 326 primary schools. Besides, 77 educational institutions including high schools and madrasa and four colleges remained closed due to the flood.
Department of Agricultural Extension said 18,645 hectares of croplands were submerged by the flood.
