Flood situation in Brahmaputra river basin improving

GAIBANDHA, Aug 30 (BSS): Overall flood situation in char areas and the Brahmaputra river basin under four upazilas in the district has started improving since Friday night with the recession of flood waters.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board said water level of river Brahmaputra fell by 4 cm in the last 24 hours at 9 am on Saturday and the river was flowing 19 cm below the danger level at Fulchhari Ghat in the district this morning.

On the other hand, from among the other major rivers, the water level of the Ghagot also registered fall by 2cm during the period and was flowing 68cm above the danger level at New Bridge point of the district town.

Due to the flood, over one 0.11 million people of the chars and the river basin areas of 30 unions in Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas were marooned, said acting relief and rehabilitation officer and assistant commissioner Nazmul Huda.

Deputy Director of Department of Agricultural Extension Mir Abdur Razzak said as many as 3,429 hectares of land with standing crops in 30 unions under four upazilas went under flood water but the extent of damages caused by flood could not be ascertained immediately.

Due to the flood a total of over 107 government primary schools of four upazilas in the district were closed down as flood waters entered the school premises hampering the academic activities for the students, said district primary education officer AKM Amirul Islam.
