GAIBANDHA, June 16 (BSS): With the fall of water level in the river Brahmaputra in last 24 hours ending on Tuesday 9:00am overall flood situation in chars and river basin areas of four upazilas in the district started improving.

The officials of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) said water level of the river Brahmaputra decreased by 38 cm during the period and the river was flowing 24 cm below its danger mark at Fulchharighat point.

Due to the inundation, jute and summer vegetable on the char land and the river basin areas of Sundarganj, Sadar, Fulchhari and Shaghata upazilas are still now under flood water making the farmers more worried about their crops.

Apart from it, erosion has taken serious turn at many places along the western side of the river of the upazilas making the people living on the river bank threatened.

Many of the erosion victims have taken shelter on the nearby flood control embankment and are passing their days and nights in hardship with the domestic animals and poultry birds.

Ratanpur and Singria points of Fulchhari upazila are in vulnerable position as the Brahmaputra river has intensified the erosion at the points very recently.

Bangladesh Water Development Board is trying to check the erosion through dumping geo-textile sand bags in the points.
