A view of inundated Khukni High School in Enayetpur upazila of Sirajganj district — FE Photo SIRAJGANJ, Oct 05: It has become a common trend for the students of Khukni High School under Enayetput upazila in Sirajganj district to undergo immense suffering due to flooding during monsoon every year.
The school compound went under floodwater in July and the situation still continues, hitting academic activities hard.
The flooding is causing extreme woes to two thousand students of the school.
Along with the playground, the school compound has also remained inundated, said headmaster of the school Abdus Salam.
The students cannot move easily for the swampy patches of the school field, he added.
District Education Office sources said about 20 high schools and 10 primary schools, including Khukni High School, have been badly affected due to water stagnation this monsoon.
The inundation has forced the authorities to keep the institutions shut for a long period.
The students suffer much during the rainy season as the school premises including the playground goes under water, said a guardian.
Chairman of the school managing committee Firoz Hasan Anik said they have sent letters to the higher authorities seeking fund allocation for immediate repair work.
Flooding caused by excessive rains and onrush of water from the upstream in the Indian hills is a perennial problem for the school, the chairman added.
As the school is not on a high land, it remains under water for several months during monsoon every year, causing untold sufferings for the children, said a ninth grader, Sabina Yeasmin.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer Nazmul Hossain said he has sent a report after inspecting the school seeking immediate measures.
The UNO also said it is not possible for the students of the school to attend classes for five months during monsoon.
