RANGPUR, Aug 16: Flower business has become lucrative in Rangpur in recent years as the traders are earning handsome profit out of it and their socio-economic condition is also improving significantly.
Due to growing demands many people are showing their interest in flower business in recent times and consequently a good number of flower markets and farms have been set up in different parts of the city and its adjacent areas.
In the past, flower was only seen in decorating houses, gardens of some aristocratic persons, but things have changed now.
Nowadays, flower has become an important commercial product as its use in marriage ceremony and other socio-cultural functions has increased gradually.
Sources said, most of the flowers of our country are the species of India, Panama, China, Japan and Africa. Some farmers Started flower cultivation as commercial basis due to heavy demands.
As a result many flower farms have been set up in Rangpur district to meet the local demands. Hundreds of people are earning their livelihood by cultivating flowers and day by day the number of growers is increasing significantly.
Garland, bunch and flower baskets are called cut-flowers. The business of cut flowers was started by selling to the buyers and devotees of holy places.
The traders said different types of roses are being sold at Tk. 5 to 10 per piece, tube rose Tk. 6 to 12 per stick, gladiola Tk. 4 to 8. The different kinds of marigold garland and baskets are sold at Tk. 100 to Tk. 350.
At present more than 50 flower shops are in Rangpur city and a huge quantity of flowers is being sold in these shops everyday.
Commercially used flowers are rose, tuberose, different species of orchid, gladiola etc. Besides chinabox, jasmine, water lily, marigold etc are also locally known.
The flower traders said most of the flowers are produced in the country except some kinds of marigold which are imported at times from neighbouring countries.
A number of traders said the demand of flowers is increasing day by day and more people are getting interested in its business.
Students urged to
maintain cleanliness
A BSS report says: Speakers at a nutrition and hygiene campaign have called upon the students for maintaining cleanliness and consuming nutritious foods for reducing diseases in the process of building a healthier and meritorious nation.
They were addressing the 'Nutrition and Hygiene Campaign- 2014' organised by World Vision Bangladesh under its Fulbari Area Development Programme (ADP) at Siddeshi High School under Fulbari upazila of Dinajpur recently.
With Acting Manager of Fulbari ADP of World Vision Bangladesh Badal Sangma in the chair, Acting Headmaster of Siddeshi High School Saiful Islam attended the discussion as the chief guest.
About 450 male and female students of the school participated in the campaign to acquire practical knowledge on source of nutrition, harms of fried foods, importance of hand wash and keeping house and class rooms clean and eight methods of hand wash.
