Forging social movement to resist human rights violation stressed

RAJSHAHI, Jul 16 (BSS): Speakers at a daylong views-sharing meeting here on Sunday unequivocally called for forging social resistance against all sorts of human rights violation for the sake of institutionalization of democracy.
They said only the government or any single organization is not capable to do the same as the situation of human rights violation has gone into far depth.
Human Rights Defenders Forum (HRDF) and Ain O Shalish Kendra (ASK) jointly organized the discussion on "Human Rights: Role of Citizens" at the conference hall of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The discussants viewed that establishing transparency and accountability in every spheres of life including politics and civic-service sector could be the effective means of ensuring human rights for all.
Former Adviser of Caretaker Government and ASK Executive Director Advocate Sultana Kamal, addressed the discussion as the focal person, said the rate of human rights violation has gradually been increasing in the country due to various reasons like corruption, poverty and illiteracy.
She said the human rights situation should be improved in an integrated way and the young generation can play vital role in this regard.
Advocate Sultana Kamal emphasized the need for bringing the country's executive and judicial system under transparency and accountability and said importance should be given on establishing non-communal society.
She called for enactment of the proposed Women Development Policy as early as possible and its total enforcement for substantial development of the country's womenfolk coupled with freeing them from all sorts of discrimination and violation of human rights.
She noted that stern action must be taken against those who are misleading the general public in the name of religion.
In his address of welcome, ASK Director Nur Khan Liton gave an overview of the HRDF and ASK activities and so far achievements.
