JHENIDAH, Sept 13: Funds, allotted every year for maintenance of roads under Jhenidah Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) are insufficient, official sources said.
There are a total of 1714 roads of four categories -- Upazila road, Union road, Village road A and Village road B -- under LGED in the district. And the length of roads here is on the rise every year. Of the total, 1411.70 kilometres (km) is of Bituminous Carpeting (BC), 524.45 km of Water Bond Macadam (WBM)/ Herring-bone Bond (HBB) and 2922.78 km of earthen now.
In Sadar upazila there are 388 roads under LGED, Jhenidah totalling 1242.90 km among which 434.48 km is of BC, 85.69 km of WBM/HBB and 722.73 km of earthen.
Under LGED in Harinakundu upazila there are 212 roads totalling 491.67 km of which 210.57 km is of BC, 45.69 km of WBM/HBB and 235.43 km of earthen.
The number of roads of the department in Kaliganj upazila is 340 amounting to a total length of 902.51 km. Of them, 185.06 km is of BC, 83.61 km of WBM/HBB and 633.84 km of earthen.
Of a total number of 269 roads amounting to 929.18 km under Shailkupa upazila, 307.22 km is of BC, 49.13 km of WBM/HBB and 572.83 km of earthen.
In Kotchandpur upazila under LGED, there are 175 roads in total that amounts to 426.78 km. Of the total, 77.55 km is of BC, 74.24 km of WBM/HBB and 274.99 km of earthen.
And LGED has 330 roads in Moheshpur upazila with a total length of 865.89 km of which 196.82 km is of BC, 186.09 km of WBM/HBB and 482.98 km of earthen.
However, the funds allotted for maintenance of these roads are not sufficient and at present. With the fund available only 90-100 km of the roads can be addressed, concerned sources added.
Normally, a road requires maintenance not before four years after its construction and there is no scope to repair it within three years, according to road maintenance policy.
Md Rakib-ul-Alam, Executive Engineer, LGED, Jhenidah said fund allocated every year is not sufficient to operate maintenance of the roads throughout the district, and it is only near about one-fourth of the requirement.
