Ginger farmers suffer losses in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, Jan 30: Harvesting of ginger is going on in Nilphamari district. This year the growers of ginger are sustaining huge losses as 80 per cent of the crop was destroyed due to virus and excessive rain.

Sources said although the soil of Nilphamari is ginger cultivation friendly but virus and other diseases damage the crop every year. Farmers are disappointed in cultivating the spice due to non-availability of virus-free seed of ginger which they are demanding for so long.

While contacted Abu Alam, a ginger farmer of Itakhola union parishad of sadar Upazila, said he cultivated ginger in 60 decimal of land but he harvested only 10 maunds (400 kg) of ginger in total.
