FARIDPUR, Feb 03 (UNB): The cultivation of gladiolas, a foreign variety of flower, has become popular among the farmers of the district as its cultivation proved to be more profitable than other crops due to its huge demand in capital and other parts of the country.
As soil and weather of the district are suitable for cultivating the flower, the farmers are now showing more interest in cultivating it switching from traditional crops like paddy.
While talking to this correspondent, a gladiolas grower from Machchor area under Sadar, said he has been cultivating the flower for four consecutive years and earned a good profit.
"After earning good profit from growing the flower on one acre of land in three years, I have planted gladiolas on seven acres of land this year. Gladiolas which have been produced on my land are sent to the flower market at Shahbag in the capital," said Moslem Miah.
Like Moslem, a good number of farmers including Billal Miya, Hazrat Ali and Anawer Hossain from the suburb area of the district have started farming the flower and made profit.
Agronomist Md Abdul Bashar of DAE, Faridpur Sadar, said the agricultural department is providing training and incentives to encourage the farmers in flower cultivation.
Kartik Chandra Chakravarty, deputy director of Department of Agricultural Extension Department, said this year different types of flowers, including Gladiolas, are being cultivated on at least 20 hectares of land.
There is a bright prospect of the Gladiolas cultivation in the district as it soil and weather are suitable for the flower production, he said.
According to the flower growers, it takes around 70/90 thousand taka to grow the flower in a bigha of land and within three months of cultivation farmers can start selling the flowers and can earn one and a half lakh taka profit.
