NILPHAMARI, June 16: The innovative venture of the local administration of Kishorgonj upazila of Nilphamari district to rehabilitate beggars is on the verge of favourable response and as such created nationwide appreciation and awakening. It also attracted the concerned authorities.
In the meantime Principal Secretary of the Prime Minister's office Abul Kalam Azad visited the spot along with Divisional Commissioner Dilwar Bakth, Director of "One Home One Farm" project Prosanto Kumar Roy, DC Nilphamari Zakir Hossain and others.
Sources said the secretary exchanged views with the beggars in Kishorgonj and committed to provide adequate support to make the project a sustainable one. Local MP Shoakat Chowdhury also making contact with the project frequently and urged to replicate it across the country.
While contacted UNO Kishorgonj Siddiqur Rahman said survey that was conducted with the help of RDRS, Ansar and VDP found 797 beggars in the upazila. They were categorised and rehabilitated into a job according to the ability and suitability of a particular beggar.
The job is created by distributing cow, goat, business items and so on. Some were included in one home one farm association and some were included in social safety net programme like aged, widow, disabled allowance and so on.
A total of Tk 0.4 million has so far been deposited by local people and others in a specific bank account meant for the project. Different national and international NGO's demonstrated their willingness to be attached with the project. abumusa88@gmail.com
