Gopalganj coriander peasants make good profit for high price

GOPALGANJ, Mar 11: Coriander farmers of Jalalabad union under Sadar upazila in the district are making a good profit due to a good market price of the crop.

The crop is being sold at Tk 1200 to Tk 1400 per maund in the local market.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj official sources said a total of 655 hectares of land have been brought under coriander cultivation in the district with the production target of 1,352 tonnes. About 500 farmers' family of Jalalabad union cultivated the seed on about 120 hectares of land.

Bashir Sheikh of village Kutibari under Jalalabad union said a grower can easily make a profit of Tk 9,000 to Tk 10,000 a season from cultivation of coriander on one bigha of land.

The cultivator said he is growing the crop on 33 decimals of land this season and expecting to earn over Tk 5,000.

He further said a good number of farmers have already started harvesting the crop. They are satisfied over the production.

Sources said about eight to nine maunds of coriander can be produced in a bigha of land (52 decimal) and farmers can earn Tk 10,000 from the crop produce in a bigha of land.
