GOPALGANJ, July 19: The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has taken a massive programme to make sugarcane cultivation a success this season.
According to the Gopalganj DAE official sources, a total of 660 hectares of land have been brought under sugarcane farming in the district with the production target of 36,900 tonnes.
Some 6,500 farmers across the district are involved with jute production this year, sources said.
Rashamay Mondal, Kasiani upazila agriculture officer, said sugarcane grows well in the area. Some 1600 grassroots farmers in the upazila are farming the cash crop on 280 hectares of land.
Md Badsha Fakir of Chapta village under Ratoil union in Kasiani upazila said he cultivated sugarcane on 52 decimals of land spending Tk 35,000.
The cultivator expects to make a profit of Tk 65,000 from the produce this season.
Md Mizanur Rahman, upazila agriculture officer, Gopalganj Sadar, said a total of 315 hectares of land have been brought under sugarcane cultivation in the upazila with the production target of 18,000 tonnes.
There are around 1900 sugarcane cultivators in Sadar upazila, he added.
Farmer Bimal Krishna Pandey of Manikhar village under Sadar upazila said many farmers in the upazila have attained financial solvency by growing sugarcane on commercial basis.
It is considered as a profitable venture in the area, the cultivator added.
