GOPALGANJ, Jan 8: Farmers of Latifpur Union under Gopalganj Sadar are becoming solvent by growing water arum (Latiraj) and farmers in this area proved it Latiraj Arum is more profitable vegetable crop comparatively any vegetable crops.
Nagendranath Bain (53), a farmer of village Kacharipara under sadar upazila in Gopalganj told the FE that he cultivated Arum origin "Latiraj" on 26 decimal of land and spend Tk 25,000 and he earning Tk 0.1 million from it produce, till last month and surplus in his field which amounting about Tk 50,000, Nagen said during visit at his field.
Maximum marginal farmers in this region in cultivating Arum on commercial basis and they are getting a good profit from it.
According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Gopalganj official sources said, a total of 50 hectares of land have been brought under "Latiraj" cultivation in sadar upazila where production target at 240 tonnes this year.
About 1,000 farmers including male and female under Gopalganj sadar upazila also involved in this farming, sources said.
Prodip Bala (42), another farmer of village Latifpur under sadar upazila said, he cultivated water Arum origin "Latiraj" on one local bigha (52 decimal) of land.
He got record profit above Tk 0.35 million from it produce where spend Tk only 55,000. At one stage he said, soil condition is favourable in our areas for farming of water Arum. As a result we are getting a good benefit from it produce, Prodip said.
Nazma Haque, Sub Assistant Agriculture Officer (SAAO), Latifpur union under sadar upazila in the district told the FE that Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Gopalganj have also provided to the farmers for farming of this vegetable crop and maintaining them to field level.
She said "Latiraj" water Arum origin is more profitable vegetable crop and farmers can start harvest after 2/2.5 months from planting it. It is source of vitamin A and Iron, Nazma said.
