A female farmer of Nalua village under Kalabari union of Kotalipara upazila in Gopalganj is busy now planting tomato saplings — FE Photo GOPALGANJ, Oct 23: Tomato farmers of Kalabari union under Kotalipara upazila in the district are now busy cultivating tomato in advance to make profit amid the price spiral of daily essential commodities.
A total of 413 hectares of land have been brought into tomato cultivation this season, according to sources at the agriculture office in Kotalipara.
About 3,265 farmers of Kotalipara upazila are involved in tomato farming, they said.
Dilip Barai, a tomato farmer of Nalua village under Kalabari union, said he has cultivated 'UDAYAN' tomato variety on 26 decimal of land this year at a cost of Tk 38,000.
"Tomato cultivation has begun in full swing," he added.
Ramendranath Halder, sub-assistant agriculture officer (SAAO) at Kolabari union under Kotalipara upazila, told the FE that farmers in this region get huge benefits from advance tomato farming every year.
Amrito Majumder, another tomato farmer of Chalkpukuria village under Kalabari union, said he has cultivated tomato on 30 decimals of land this year.
If weather remains favourable, he will get huge profit from his advance tomato farming.
"I expect I will get 180 maunds of tomato which market price is about Tk 252,000. One maund of tomato sells at Tk 1,400."
Kotalipara Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO) Dolon Roy told the FE that soil and weather in this region is favourable for tomato farming.
Tomato growers are more laborious and our field workers like SAAO always cooperate those farmers who are involved in this farming.
As a result, growers get huge benefits from this advance tomato farming, the UAO said.
