CHANDPUR, Apr 27: The academic teaching at Dakhshin Nij Mehar Government Primary School in Shahrasti Upazila Sadar is being disrupted due to an acute shortage of classrooms.
This is the sad tale of a government primary school where 150 children are getting light of basic education from six teachers.
But, an acute shortage of classrooms has been prevailing for a long time in this school. So, the proper education for children has being been hampered for a long time.
The school has only two rooms to take classes in two shifts from morning till 4:00pm. The 2nd shift begins at 11:00am and it runs up to 4:00pm.
In the first shift, nursery, classes- one and two are held and the rest classes are held in the 2nd shift that begins from 11 am till 4pm.
During this correspondent's visit on Thursday, little learners, including Siyam, Fatema and Sakib, told the FE that due to the acute shortage of classrooms, they are facing problems and their attention is often broken in the classes when two classes go on at the same time in one room.
But, there is no office room for headmaster and assistant teachers. That's why, the headmaster and assistant teachers were seen to do office work sitting just beside/ under the stairs.
Nor even there is any space for offering prayers-alleged the head teacher Mariom Akter and assistant teachers- Jannatul Mawa and her colleagues .
Due to the acute shortage of classrooms, every year the number of students is decreasing too.
The guardians and their children have been disappointed at first sight when they observe the acute shortage of classrooms in this school.
Talking to the FE, the head teacher has said since her joining the school in 2017, every year she is writing to the higher authorities to build upward floor of the school for holding classes smoothly but to no effect as yet.
When contacted, Assistant Upazila Primary Education officer Mohammad Akter Hossain has said, "The school urgently needs academic rooms. We have sent representations several times to the higher authorities concerned and the Education Facilities Department to include this school for building its 1st floor but to no effect as yet. Again we'll write to remind about it highlighting the urgent need for class rooms in this school.''
