Govt undertakes massive expansion plan for power production

GAIBANDHA, July 25: Principal Abul Kalam Azad, MP, from Gaibandha-4 constituency, at a function Friday said the present government had undertaken a massive capacity expansion plan to have 24000 MW capacity of power production in the country.
"The countrywide electricity generation was 3,268 MW at the beginning of 2009, and now it has reached 11,265 MW. The power system has been expanded to keep pace with the fast growing demand", he said.
Local lawmaker Abul Kalam Azad came up with the comments while addressing a function of rural electricity supply organised by Gaibandha Palli Bidyut Samity (GPBS) at Jibanpur village of Gobindaganj upazila in the afternoon as the chief guest.
With general manager of GPBS GHM Wahedul Haque in the chair, the function was also addrssed among others by former upazila chairman Mohammad Hossain Foku, and Kochasahar union parishad chairman Abu Sufian Mondal.
The government is expecting to generate 13,301MW electricity at the end of this year and has the vision to generate 20,000 MW with the aim to bring all citizens under electricity cover by 2021, lawmaker said.
The government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina  has achieved a number of successes in the power sector during the past six and a half years; he said adding that the generation capacity has been more than double.
He also said that past BNP-Jamaat alliance government was fully responsible for creating the country's power crisis as it did not work properly in this sector.
Later, local lawmaker formally inaugurated the electrification programme at over 200 families of the village of the upazila by pressing a switch of a bulb as the chief guest.
A large number of people including the officials of GPBS, public representatives, social workers, political leaders and local elite including journalists of print and electronic media were present on the occasion.
GM of GPBS GHM Wahedul Haque said earlier, a total of 160 families of Ashrayan Project at Char Balua area under Mohimaganj union of the upazila were brought under rural power network by the samity Thursday afternoon.
