RAJSHAHI, July 5 (BSS): State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam, MP, said the government of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has been working relentlessly for welfare of the hardworking labour-class people.
He said the Bangladesh in near future will be familiarised before the world arena as a progressive, developing and democratic nation.
He was addressing a function to mark the distribution of grant cheques among the storm and violence affected people at Bagha Upazila Parishad auditorium of the district yesterday as the chief guest.
A total of 87 affected people were given corrugated sheets and cash money from Tk 10,000 to Tk 25,000 each.
With Badal Chandra Halder, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, in the chair, Upazila Awami League General Secretary Ashraful Islam and Vice-president Azizul Alam also spoke on the occasion.
State Minister Alam said the country's poverty rate has been reduced to 24 per cent from 42 per cent by dint of the epoch-making efforts of the government.
He said, "We've already stepped into that stairs as Bangladesh has been declared a lower middle-income country from the lower-income nation".
"Bangladesh doesn't want to stay at the lower ladder... it wants to climb to the peak and we will do whatever necessary for that." Becoming a lower middle income country is certainly something to cheer about.
It makes us firmly believe that we will soon elevate to the status of middle income country, he added.
Mentioning that Bangladesh was moving ahead on all fronts, he renewed his government's vow to turn the country into a peaceful abode in South Asia.
Shahriar Alam said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly for building an economically self-reliant Bangladesh.
