Green pepper selling at throwaway prices in Nilphamari

NILPHAMARI, May 20: Harvesting of green pepper has been started in Nilphamari district. But the price of the essential spice has came down to a throwaway price level. At present one maund (40kg) of green pepper is being sold at Tk 300 in the wholesale markets of the district.
Sources said bumper production of green pepper has been achieved in the district in this season and trucks loaded with sacks of the spice are being transported to Dhaka, Chittagong and Khulna everyday and some traders are also transporting those by trains. Huge stacks of pepper sacks are to be found in Nilphamari, Domar and Chilahati rail stations waiting to be transported to respective destinations.
While contacted Abu Alam one pepper farmer of Ketkibari UP of Domar upizila said in one bigha (30 decimal) of land 100 maunds of pepper is being produced.
He cultivated pepper in one bigha of land and expecting 100 maunds of pepper while he had to expend Tk 20,000 excluding harvesting cost. abumusa88@gmail.com
