KHULNA, Apr 29 (BSS): The scorching summer heat wave, one of the worst climate change risks for the living beings, leading to acute water crisis has made life here extremely measurable paralyzing usual day-to-day activities in the country's south- western divisional city.
For more than a month, the city dwellers here surrounded by a number of rivers and close to the Bay of Bengal have been suffering exorbitantly due mainly to sharp fall in the water levels, while the Khulna WASA has been struggling to meet even half the demand for water.
The extreme heat in Khulna city as elsewhere of the division and also the record-breaking heat in larger areas of the country are putting all irrespective of ages into a state of different acute risks that the heat wave poses. Hot on the heels of the angry summer is part of a longer-term trend towards hotter weather.
Managing Director of WASA, Md. Abdullah told BSS that they can supply 11 crore liters of water everyday against the demands of 24 crore liters for 16 lakh city dwellers. "We can not meet the demand for water as our two projects' works have been closed due to stay orders by the high court." he said.
The climate change is already increasing the likelihood and severity of heat wave across Bangladesh with the widespread worst affect including sharp rise in the number of patients, slow speed in workplaces, profuse dehydration, mortality of heat-sensitive plants and severe stress on agricultural systems.
There has been no rain over the last few days for which rivers, ponds, canals and other water reservoirs in Khulna have virtually gone waterless, he said adding, "we will try to ensure smooth water supply everyday."
