Growers show interest in farming BARI-14, BARI-9 mustard for more output

MAGURA, Oct 29: Cultivation of high-yielding BARI-14 and BARI-9 mustard is gaining popularity in the district.

Sources said per hectare production of BARI-14 and BARI-9 mustard is around 135 tonnes while other common varieties give around 115 tonnes of yield.

Moreover, these two varieties are less vulnerable to draught.

The Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Magura, sources said they are expecting to bring 12,500 hectares of land under BARI-14 and BARI-9 mustard cultivation this season.

For this, some 5,000 farmers will be given 20 kg of DAP and 10 kg of MOP fertilisers and one kg seeds at free of cost.

Nobuat Mollah of Raigram village under Magura Sadar said he cultivated BARI-9 mustard on one bigha of land and achieved a good production.

"This year I will grow the same variety for more production", the farmer added.

Another farmer Krishna Pada of Sreerampur village said, "DAE will provide incentive for growing high-yielding BARI-9 and 14 mustard varieties which is helpful for the grassroots farmers like me."

DAE official Shohrab Hossein said, "We encourage the farmers to cultivate BARI- 9 and 14 mustard for more production and profit."
