Habiganj farmer gets success in winter Ridge gourd farming

SYLHET, Nov.23: The huge green leaves spread on the bamboo-made racks for nurturing the vegetable plants catch the eyes of anyone. It is an almost common scene on the vegetable field at Sharifkhani area of Baniachang upazila in Habiganj.

Farmer Abdul Malek's in an off -season bid for cultivating Ridge gourd (Jhinga) is successful Although it is a vegetable mainly grown in summer, he did it at the start of winter and got a good success, said some agriculture officials.

Huge flowers of the Jhinga plants were seen yesterday. Abdul Malek had got good returns from good yield on a small plot of land during the last year's winter season on an experimental basis. This year the man did it on a 30 decimal plot at the beginning of October. Based on the last year's success, Abdul Malek expects to harvest the vegetable worth taka 80,000 this season as he had spent taka 20,000 for the farming of hero variety of hybrid jhinga.

The 35-year-old man also cultivated other crops like bitter gourd, pumpkin, tomato, etc. the early grown vegetables have a good demand among the locals, he added.

He had started marketing the produces at local markets like Borobazar, Ganingganj bazaar Adarsha bazaar etc. locally produced vegetables have a good demand in the markets.
