SYLHET. Aug 09: A road from Ajmiriganj upazila headquarters to Bodolpur in Habiganj district has got badly damaged within four months after completion of the construction work.

Part of the newly-constructed road also caved in due to heavy rains.

Locals criticised quick damage of the road mentioning use of substandard construction materials as the main reason.

The road was repaired through a contractor at a cost of Tk10 million in the last fiscal year (FY) 2022-2023.

Due to alleged negligence of the contractor, it took a long time to complete the work, which finally ended in March this year.

If rain continues for some more days, the road link may be snapped anytime as it collapsed at various points in the last four days.

An official of the LGED said the road collapsed due to heavy rains in Koiardhala sluice gate area. Locals alleged the contractor used low quality sandy soil in construction of the road. As a result, it got damaged due to continuous rains for three to four days.

They also said other low quality materials and lack of monitoring were the main reasons behind the damage.

They demanded immediate steps to repair the damaged portion of the road, fearing further collapse may take place at other points anytime.

An official of the LGED admitting that the construction work was of poor quality said the contractor will repair the damaged portion of the road soon.
