CHANDPUR, July 23: For want of passenger bus service from Haimchar Upazila Sadar to Chandpur district town, Cumilla, Dhaka, Chattogram and Sylhet, several hundred people of the bordering Faridganj and Roypur upazilas have been suffering acutely for the past four decades.
Except Haimchar, all other seven upazilas of the district have direct bus service from the upazila headquarters to Dhaka, Cumilla, Chattogram and Sylhet via Chandpur town; but there is no such bus service in Haimchar Upazila.
Since independence, though small, Haimchar has been very famous for bumper yield of betel leaf, betel nuts, coconut and various kinds of fresh fish of the Meghna River.
Betel leaf farmer of Alghi Dakhshin village Sarder Noore Alam Jiku said he has become self-reliant by cultivating betel leaf in his fields for the past few years. But he cannot sell and transport his produce to Dhaka, Chattogram, Cumilla and Sylhet for want of a good transport system.
In the absence of bus service, fish traders, betel leaf and betel nut and coconut traders of Haimchar have been facing inconveniences in sending these items to Dhaka and other places via Chandpur.
Many traders said they can send these items by launches which are irregular and take 6 to 8 hours to reach Dhaka, which is really painstaking and disgusting too.
Now-a-days, Upazila's road communication is much better and developed.
Heavy vehicles usually run between Haimchar and Chandpur round the clock safely and smoothly.
