NILPHAMARI, Feb 24: Harvesting of ginger has been started in Nilphamari district. As the main ginger cultivating zone, the district produces more than 50 per cent of the total ginger production in the country.
Per hectare production of the spice is very scant as its high yield variety seed has not yet been explored by agro scientists of the country and the growers claim that there is no research on it at all. As a result of which the growers are forced to use traditional virus-prone low yield seeds of the valuable spice and the country has to import those at a cost of hard earned foreign currency.
